Apparently, a couple of guys had backed out of his September camp and fishing trip up to the Boundary Waters in Canada and he need two replacements. Scott wanted to go, and he was looking for a second. I had been in full fish mode for year at that point, so I was …

This Project

When my grandmother [My dad's mother] died, it was the first time in my life that a death resulted in the vacating of a home. Up to this point, there was always somebody still left to manage the property and possessions left behind. We found ourselves with a house full of my grandparents' stuff that needed to be organized and extracted. Stuff that had meaning to my grandparents that we could not comprehend. I'm not talking about a room full of Elvis memorabilia. Just the odd…

A Solution For Canoe Butt

If you are going to spend a week camping and canoeing in the Boundary Waters, your butt is going to get sore. This is especially true if you are going to be fishing for ten hours a day. Yeah, those Crazy Creek Canoe chairs will help but as we found out, there is more you can do.

As a veterinarian, Doc has been a dog guy for a long time. They would join us up at Strawberry Lake and provide entertainment and love that only dogs can give. I still have Spot hair stuck to Gore-Tex

Fishin' Fishin' Friday

Fishin' Fishin' Friday was something I'd tease my children about. When they were 9 or 10, we got cable TV and The Cartoon Network became part of our lives. When I was that age, Saturday Morning Cartoons was all we had. Now my kids had a channel entirely devoted to zany animated entertainment. Granted some of those programs were clever and entertaining at any age. So, it wasn't too bad to watch them together.

From 1999 to somewhere around 2015, I was really into fishing. It wasn't easy to get me started but my friends Aric and Scott finally convinced me to go fishing with them at Strawberry Lake in Evart, Michigan. It was at Strawberry Lake that the Hatfish competition was born.

In just a few short years I acquired a rather extensive collection of

Hatfish - April 14th, 2000

Scott and Aric invited me back to Strawberry for ice fishing in January. Still not into the fishing “thing”, I was certainly not going to freeze my butt off for it. So, my next trip was in April. The weather was nice here in town. It was warm and very spring like. However, up at Strawberry, it was just getting over winter. I had packed some cool weather clothing, but I was not prepared for how cold and windy it was up there. After all, in October, it was beautiful! T…

Trying to get the pictures and details together. This one goes to Doc. This fish just about killed him. We were ice fishing on Strawberry. It was later afternoon and the sun had just fallen behind the tree line leaving that cold blue shadow over everything. Scott was taking a hike around the lake. I was taking comfort inside beside the fireplace. Doc was out on the ice about 30 yards from shore in front of his place.

The Hat comes home with this 4-pound Bass. It was caught on a Texas Rigged Pumpkinseed 7″ Berkley power Worm, of course. It was fairly shallow in front of Brooks’ place in the late morning. The mild winter and early spring had pumped up fish population. Everywhere we went there were large schools of sizable Bluegill. The only species we didn’t encounter this time were the Perch.

No, this isn’t the actual Hatfish but it is half of the fish that caused a tie and a subsequent tiebreaker. There were several factors at play on Strawberry this May. In contrast to last spring, this year, we felt that the lake and spring in general was about 5 weeks behind schedule. It was cold and very rainy. We had never seen the water level so high. Another factor was that the lake association had decided to add structure to lake. Their well-intentioned goal was to prov…

It was a different kind of trip. The late spring was even later up on Strawberry. Scheduling was a little off as well. We were a little earlier than usual. Scott couldn’t get up there until Thursday afternoon and I had to leave Friday morning. That meant that there wasn’t a time where we all fished together. That was spring of 1979. The next time I went was later that year with my Grandpa Guingrich. He used to fish a bit. We went down to the river by IPFW and caught…

The idea of the hatfish was Aric’s. Back in October of 1999 on my first trip to Strawberry Lake, Aric brought a baseball cap declaring that the member of the Hatish Crew that caught the biggest fish of the trip would keep the hat until the next trip. And so began the tradition of the hatfish.

Doc Sabins

Aric is a veterinarian. Back in the mid 80’s we shared an apartment. He is the father of the Hatfish and the Strawberry connection. As of Sunday, May 20th, 2001, this Yankee Fisherman has become a resident of North Carolina. You can find him at the Roxboro Animal Hospital when he isn’t on the water. Over the years, Doc has had numerous dogs join us up at Strawberry. I think he might be pet free at the moment.

My Musical Evolution – Part 6 Objects Not A Scary As They Appear

I don’t think think this project would have even been possible if it were not for the vastness of the internet. It would be impossible for me to physically track down the materials to generate the images or share the musical samples or do the memory jogging research. At the end of this post, I’m going to ask you to use the comments section and post the first song that you loved. I want you to be honest, I’m not here to judge. I kn…

My Musical Evolution – Part 7 Working On The Railroad

So we approach a transitional moment. Up to this point, with a couple of exceptions, the music has almost all come from Disney or had been Disney-fied in some way. This album The Little Engine That Could – And Other Railroad Songs And Sound Effects was made by Happy Time Chorus. I did a quick Bing search on Happy Time and saw that they did a bunch of records back in the day. We might have even had a couple of them but this is the one that s…

My Musical Evolution – Part 8 Scratchy 45 Days

The really sad thing that I’ve realized in doing this project is that such a large portion of the music that I listened to and liked up to this point is simply lost to time and the weakness of the vinyl medium. Those early Disney records are not likely to be re-released on CD. This is a shame as I’d really be interested in buying some of those to give them a fresh listen now. If you scour the internet, you might find where somebody has ripped the …

My Musical Evolution – Part 9 Diving Into Mom’s Records

As I mentioned previously, The Scratchy 45 Days were powered by my adoring mother’s extensive collection of 45 rpm singles taken from top 40 style AM radio. What I’m struggling with now is how to represent all that music in a cohesive yet entertaining and educational manner. Here are a couple of thoughts. I could simply play DJ for you and line up each post with a stack of 7 songs and interject a comment here or there when it seems approp…

For some reason, I woke up on January 1st, 2012 with the desire to do some kind of big project. Something that I would spend the entire year doing. After pondering for a while, I decided to try to document what I called My Musical Evolution“. This was supposed to be a timeline that documented the

Portage Anchor

There is some great scenery and awesome fishing in the Boundary Waters. When you find some fish, you want to anchor over the spot but you don’t want to truck a heavy anchor all the way especially if you are portaging. Like in backpacking, every ounce counts. Here’s a tip to have that heavy anchor when you need but not have to carry it from lake to lake.

I've had the pleasure of being “Net Man” for some of Scott's biggest trophy fish. We recently heard that the older gentlemen that served as his Taxidermist has reached an age where he no longer taxis.

Steelhead Charter With Wild Bill - March 27th, 2001

I went to bed at 11:30 Saturday night. I knew that I had to get up at 2:00 am to set out for Berrien Springs but the excitement of the next day kept me awake. Scott had arranged this. He had been up on the Steelhead run before and had brought back tales of his battles man-o e fish-o. I was apprehensive about the trip. I had saved up the money to buy my Tackle Station and going on this charter would deplete those funds. The weather was also a c…

Strawberry Lake is a small private lake just northwest of Evart, Michigan. It is about 25 acres in size and surrounded by miles of forest. It is spring fed and flows into Whitmore Pond to the east. The water is cool and clear which makes visibility nearly 25 feet down on a clear day.

I've been a stuff person for as long as I can remember. I think I'm getting better. I have been able to convince myself that “I don't need that” for certain things that I would have purchased in the past. My weakness for buying stuff falls mainly into a few categories. DVD's, CD's, and Books. This is an improvement as I have been able divorce myself from collectible cards and hobby type stuff. As I sit here and think about the recent purchases, there really isn't very m…
